THE HEART OF THE CLUB By Dr. Sonya Rogers |
How are You Showing Up?
Pickleball has exploded across the nation, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds. It is more than a game—it builds community, strengthens wellness, and creates connections between family, friends, and even complete strangers. Neighborhoods, churches, and visitors are showing up with a paddle in hand and a smile on their faces, eager to play.
As you learn the game, develop new skills, and improve your strategy, you will naturally want to advance to the next level. But as you work to become a better player, I want to ask you a different question:
How are you showing up?
What is your preparation? Do you arrive on time, stretch properly, and bring the right equipment? What is your mindset? Do you see each opportunity to play as a chance to grow, learn, and improve?
Too often in life, we overthink situations before they even begin. We focus on the “what ifs” and allow worry to create unnecessary stress. Proper preparation and a positive mindset give us the best opportunity for success—on the court and in life.
In pickleball, you cannot look at another player and decide whether they are beatable. In life, you cannot look at a challenge and decide whether you will succeed. You must show up prepared, give your best effort, and trust that your actions and faith will guide you forward.
As an educator, I have always believed, “Laziness is not attractive.” As a coach, I often remind others that “Teamwork makes the dream work.” As a Christian, I believe we are all capable of great things when we prepare, practice, pray, and intentionally pursue our goals.
Roger Federer once said, “When I miss a shot, it is in the past. Then, I focus on the next shot.” Life works the same way. If we remain focused on past mistakes, we limit our potential for what comes next.
Sports can bring out the best in people—but sometimes they can also reveal our weaknesses. Do we become frustrated by opponents, distracted by mistakes, or impatient with others? Or do we choose kindness, humility, and grace?
If you feel like you need a reset, take time to soften your approach. Fill your life with laughter, meaningful conversations, good books, worship, and positive influences. Let go of negativity and pressure, and embrace the peace that God offers.
As Hebrews 12:14 reminds us:
“Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.”
The next time you step onto the court, remember: it’s not just about how you play the game. It’s about how you show up.
